50 Cal Glock - The title sounds like the crazy rant of an ignorant prohibitionist, but .50 glocks are a reality. Guncrafter Industries makes adapter slides for the G21 and G41 to accept their 50GI cartridges. Slides are a budget alternative to the $4,000 Model 4 Ultimate 1911 Long Slide. Priced between $595 and $660, it allows you to shoot the 50GI for significantly less than the 1911 route.
Holding ten rounds in a slightly flared magazine or nine rounds in a mounted flush, this change provides some potential for more punch per shot. The theory behind this round is simple: why waste some kinetic energy expanding it when you can launch it already expanded?
50 Cal Glock
The 50GI is a low pressure caliber similar to the classic .455 Webley. At the same pressure as the 45ACP, it is easier on the shooter and produces repeat shots just as quickly, something not seen with the 50AE or 50S&W. Ammo ratings expand from 185 grams at 1,200 fps to 275 grams at 875 fps, and a 300-gram JSP is available for punching practice and heavier game. At 700 fps, the 300g load has the same power level as the 44 Special—a softer, lighter shot that's good for quick second and third shots if necessary. All expanding bullets are optimized for thin-skinned humanoid enemies, and the 230-dimensional bore is a foot deep and about an inch wide. 185 gr light stops at 9 inches, but has a longer path. The original chronograph velocities were very close to the 4.5 inch barrel and 5-6 inch tube spec.

All copper projectiles convert velocity into expansion quite efficiently without crushing or bending the petals back on themselves. Muzzle flash was minimal with all the loads I tried (185, 230, 275 and 300).
As you can see, the hemmed rim allows for a 45ACP breech size. It's easy to load stores with just your fingers. Depending on the load, the amount of muzzle twist was either minimal or non-existent, certainly on par with the 45ACP experience. The only downside to the Glock conversion compared to the excellent long-slide 1911 was the loss of accuracy. At 10 yards my 9-shot groups were about 2.25 inches, while the 1911 with its longer scope radius and better trigger printed 7-shot groups within an inch. Again, with the #4 long slide, the group size at ten yards was less than the spread bullet size! It wasn't as good with the Glocks, though the difference was probably more ergonomic than the mechanics of the device.
Because 50GI ammo is expensive, shooters are expected to primarily train with similar handling of the 45ACP upper and carry the 50GI upper. Given the similar shooting experience and excellent conversion reliability between the two calibers, this is the way to go. Unlike more energetic cartridges such as the 10mm Auto and 44Mag, the 50GI does not wear out the shooter during training and is relatively gentle on unprotected hearing at subsonic loads.
Compared to a standard Glock magazine, the change from 13+1 to 8+1 loses a lot of capacity. Each sphere receives approximately 22% of the frontal area before and after expansion. The compromise is up to you. Should I get nine solid hits before reloading or five more shots before needing the magnetic switch?

As you can see, extended barrels are available. Although they only add a little speed, threading is an option for suppressors. Although the 50GI is currently only available from Guncrafter Industries, a number of handloading recipes call for even smaller standard loads. Burnt brass can be used many times.
